Re: Browsers
Brave Search seems to be getting worse.
The results are worse and they have stopped having an independent image search, now when you tell it to do an image search it asks if you want google or bing and then opens a new tab with google or bing for you.
It does the same thing for a video search.

Yeah I was worried about them from the start. Sounds like now they are resorting to bait and switch. I'm not so sure they are as secure and private as they claim either.Swordsmyth wrote: ↑Thu May 04, 2023 4:44 am Brave Search seems to be getting worse.

I agree. It's sad, but not unexpected. I'm still going to be following Brave because Brendan always seems to have a trick under his sleeves.Atruepatriot wrote: ↑Thu May 04, 2023 5:11 am Yeah I was worried about them from the start. Fundamentally, his mistake is that he didn't learn the same lessons that Andrew Torba of Gab made. Brendan doesn't realize that, once he got kicked out of Firefox, the rules of the game changed. It doesn't look like he's realized that he's fighting a war now, not building a tech company.
He needs to strengthen his supply chain (secure loyal customers) for prolonged campaigns, not focus on trends or features. He still doesn't have a CMO, for goodness sake. What's with these tech guys ignoring the fact that a company lives and breathes according to the Bottom Line?
Brave's search function may have been sabotaged by Big Tech from the beginning. Brave bought Tailcat 2 years ago, but who knows what Tailcat actually was.
Here's the article announcing Brave's independence from Bing. Every time Brendan's released something, it's been worse than what's promised, but improved over time. I hope this will be the case now, but I'm not holding my breath for the reasons I've written.

To select an instance, type "US" in the countries box, pick a URL and bookmark it. I would rotate regularly, maybe bookmark several and choose one randomly. Sadly, this is the "best" solution I've found for after Brave becomes fully captured and unusable (we're 90% there).
The Bug-Eaters have targeted Web search, their fingerprints are all over this.

Yes, I think Clayton is absolutely correct about options. SearX is the way to go. I have been using a Searx instance in Belgium and getting better results for the US than I have ever gotten from other engines.Macaque Mentality wrote: ↑Thu May 04, 2023 7:02 amSwordsmyth wrote: ↑Thu May 04, 2023 4:44 am Brave Search seems to be getting worse.

Re: Browsers
OK so check this out. Prince Valiant and I both have been using the LibreWolf browser and I like it so far. It comes with Searx as the default engine but you can go pick which instance you would like to use. I am really liking the combination along with "NoScript" addon to stop all the hidden fingerprinting and tracking scripts. I think the combination is about as private and secure as we are going to get with what is available. From what I see so far it is a much more secure and private FireFox. I am hoping Clayton goes and gives it a try to see how he likes it. It may already be configured default as he likes it with holes plugged.Macaque Mentality wrote: ↑Thu May 04, 2023 7:48 amClayton wrote: ↑Thu May 04, 2023 7:23 am https://searx.space

After my network attack a few months back, I'm locked down on my current configs. I am planning to buy a VPS instance in the near future (depending on other factors... if things get too insane, there's no point...) and I have a long list of things I want to test in there, including running my own Searx instance. In my view, Searx on a VPS is the best possible search solution at this time.Atruepatriot wrote: ↑Thu May 04, 2023 8:15 am OK so check this out. But Brave had a lot of features the others didn't, like an image search.

Re: Browsers
To be fair, Brave will have image search again. This is just them phasing out their dependence on Big Tech. One of the reasons why I suspect sabotage is that the search got so suddenly bad right when they decoupled from Bing. I'm sure Brendan is aware of just how bad the search is, but I've stopped listening to Brave's weekly stakeholder meetings. BaseBraveUser archives them, in case anyone's interested.Swordsmyth wrote: ↑Thu May 04, 2023 2:22 pm Yeah, I keep a list of alternatives.

To add real quick, Brendan's team does have a long history of releasing features before they are mature, then improving them via user feedback. I think they still see all of their products as betas, which strikes me as absurd from the business perspective...

Thanks @Atruepatriot for the NoScript tip.
Found out Brave can do this by default and selectively through the Brave Shields icon (lion head to the right of the address bar). It's been helping a lot.
Another note about Brave: they introduced a "Copy Text From Image" function when right clicking an image, which autodetects the text and copies it for you. To demonstrate, check out the following image:
